Travel Smarter: Skip the transatlantic flights and discover Europe's "Narnia" with our ultimate guide to avoiding the crowds, the ticket traps, and parking chaos.
Why fly twelve hours to see the Bryce Canyon in the US or Zhangjiajie in China when one of the most spectacular rock labyrinths on earth is hiding right in the heart of Central Europe?
Located in the Czech Republic, just across the Polish border, the Adršpach-Teplice Rocks offer a breathtaking landscape of 100-meter-high sandstone towers, deep mossy gorges, and crystal-clear lakes. It is so surreal that Hollywood chose it as the filming location for the winter scenes in The Chronicles of Narnia.
However, because of its popularity, visiting these rock cities during a busy holiday weekend requires military-grade planning. We took a road trip from Northern/Central Poland during the busy “Majówka” (May holiday) weekend. Here is our exact, battle-tested “Comfort Adventurer” blueprint for navigating the borders, the ticket systems, and the hiking trails without losing your mind.

The Road Trip: Drones, Flowers, and Narrow Borders
Our road trip started in Poland. We wanted to take advantage of the newly completed sections of the S3 expressway, combining it with the S5 and the toll-free sections of the A2.
The Drone Pitstop: Książ Castle
Before crossing the border, we made a strategic 2-hour stop at Książ Castle (Zamek Książ). Usually, touring castle interiors isn’t really our vibe, but we timed our trip during their annual Flower Festival. The floral arrangements were stunning, but more importantly, this was our chance to fly the drone!
- Our Tip: If you are a drone photographer, get your aerial shots at Książ Castle or other spots in Poland. Once you cross into the Adršpach-Teplice nature reserve, drones are strictly banned to protect the nesting peregrine falcons. Do not risk the massive fines.
The Mieroszów Border Crossing
Instead of taking the main, crowded border crossing at Lubawka, we used the local route through Mieroszów. This brilliant shortcut dropped us off practically at the gates of Adršpach.
- Crucial Warning: The road leading to this specific crossing is extremely narrow. We had no issues, but if you are driving a massive SUV or a wide camper van, you might find it very stressful.
(Note for non-EU travelers: As of 2026, the new biometric EES border system is active at European airports. If you are flying into Prague or Wrocław to start this road trip, factor in a little extra time at airport passport control).
The Ticket Trap: Two Parks, Two Different Rules
The Adršpach and Teplice rock cities are connected, but they are managed differently. We cannot stress this enough: do not just show up without a ticket.
While walking back to our car one afternoon, we met a desperate couple who had been turned away at the Adršpach gates because the park was completely sold out. They were desperately asking if they could sneak through the forest from another trail. Don’t be that couple.
Here is how the official booking system actually works in 2026:
Adršpach (The Strict System):
- Tickets: You can (and should) buy your tickets online months in advance. You must select a specific date and a specific time slot for your entry.
- Parking: You book and pay for your parking spot online in the same transaction as your entry ticket. It uses an ALPR (camera) system to read your license plate.
Teplice Rocks (The Flexible System):
- Tickets: The system here is different. You can only buy tickets a maximum of one week in advance. However, once purchased, the ticket is valid for any day within that 7-day window.
- Parking: You do NOT book parking online for Teplice. You simply drive up and pay the attendant on-site (bringing a contactless credit card is highly preferred).

The "Parking Free" Basecamp Strategy
To truly enjoy a “Slow Travel” experience, your choice of accommodation is crucial. We booked a room at Penzion Pod Hradem, located on the Czech side. We arrived on a Friday evening, which set us up perfectly for the weekend.
The biggest “Smart Hack” of our trip was the location. The guesthouse was located less than 1 kilometer from the main gate of the Adršpach Rocks. On our second day of hiking, we simply left our car safely parked at the guesthouse for free, walked to the reserve, and completely bypassed the chaotic, expensive, and crowded main parking lots.

Day 1: The Wild North – Teplice Rocks & The Wolf’s Gorge (Vlčí Rokle)
We started our trip on Saturday morning. Instead of heading to the crowded Adršpach gates, we headed straight to the Teplice Rocks (Teplické skály). This was our strategic move to experience the “wilder” side of the region first.
The Teplice Circuit (Blue Trail)
The Teplice loop is far less commercial than its neighbor. It is a raw, demanding labyrinth of towering sandstone walls. You will face hundreds of stone steps, climb ladders to the Střmen Castle ruins, and walk through the Sibiř (Siberia) section. Even in the middle of summer, the air here stays icy cold because the sun barely reaches the bottom of the deep, narrow canyons.

The “Wolf’s Gorge” Strategy (Vlčí Rokle)
This is our favorite logistical hack for active travelers. Instead of just doing the Teplice loop and returning to the parking lot, we didn’t exit the park. We followed the yellow-marked Wolf’s Gorge (Vlčí Rokle) trail. It’s a 3.5 km corridor that connects the two rock cities directly through the heart of the forest. It feels like you are walking through a prehistoric landscape, and it allowed us to see both rock cities in one single, epic day without ever having to touch our car keys.
- Our Tips:
- The Power Snack: Carry enough food for a full day. There are no restaurants or snack bars inside the Wolf’s Gorge, and you don’t want to get “hangry” in the middle of a 6-hour trek.
- Footwear: The humidity in the gorge makes the stone steps very slippery. Even if the sun is shining outside, wear proper hiking boots, not trainers.
Day 2: The "Side Door" Entry to Adršpach
After a comfortable night at our guesthouse in Adršpach (located less than 1km from the main gate), we woke up early for Day 2. While most tourists were stuck in traffic or waiting for the gates to open at the main Adršpach entrance, we took the “Smart Travel” approach.
The “Side Door” Strategy
We left our car safely parked at our guesthouse, which saved us the stress of navigating the crowded official parking lots. We entered the trail “from the side”—a smart, efficient path that let us see the majority of the rock formations without doubling back on ourselves.
The Highlights:
We bypassed the unnecessary tourist loops and focused on the real stars: the Gothic Gate, the massive Sugar Loaf (Głowa Cukru), and the Great Waterfall.
The Boat Trip Hack (Skalní jezírko):
Deep inside the rock city circuit, you will find the Skalní jezírko (Rock Lake). This is where the famous, traditional boat trips take place.
- Crucial Logistical Detail: These boat trips are an additional attraction with a separate fee. They are NOT included in your online entry ticket, and because the boatmen operate in a remote part of the gorge, you must pay them directly in cash (CZK). Do not expect card terminals here—come prepared with local currency.
The Mirror Finish: Pískovna Lake
Before you head back into town, do not walk straight to the exit. Take a few extra minutes to stroll around Pískovna. This is a beautiful flooded sand pit that now acts as a giant mirror for the surrounding sandstone towers. The water is incredibly clear, and the reflection of the massive rocks against the sky creates one of the best photo opportunities in the entire reserve. It is the perfect, tranquil way to end your loop before the short walk back to your guesthouse.
- Our Tip: This lake is much quieter than the Skalní jezírko (the boat trip spot) located near the main entrance. If you want a peaceful moment to soak in the views without the noise of the boat tours, Pískovna is your place.
Walking the final stretch through the town back to our guesthouse for the car was the perfect “cool down” after a morning in the rocks. It was relaxed, efficient, and cost us absolutely nothing in parking fees.
- Our Tips:
- The Booking is Your Passport: Even if you enter “from the side,” keep your printed QR code or digital ticket handy. Rangers occasionally check tickets even on the inner sections of the loop.
Final Departure: After exiting the main gate, take your time walking through the town to the guesthouse. It’s a great way to transition from the “nature mode” back to the “road trip mode” before your drive home.

Smart Logistics for Adršpach & Teplice
- The Ticket Tech: The days of walking up to a ticket booth are gone. You must book your entry time slot online in advance. Buying online is cheaper (200 CZK in high season) compared to buying at the gate (250 CZK), and it’s the only way to guarantee you won’t be turned away.
- Parking & ALPR: The parking system uses Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR). When you reserve your parking spot online, your license plate is entered into the system. The gate will open automatically when you arrive. If you book the wrong license plate or forget to book entirely, the system will not let you in.
- Drone Laws (Zero Tolerance): Both Adršpach and Teplice are National Nature Reserves. Flying a drone here is strictly forbidden. Park rangers and visitors are very protective of the local nesting birds (like the Peregrine Falcon). Keep your drone in your bag to avoid massive fines and a very unpleasant interaction with the authorities.
- Accessibility: While some sections are paved and accessible for wheelchairs or strollers, the Teplice loop involves hundreds of steep stone stairs. If you want a relaxed trip, stick to the green circuit in Adršpach.
- The “Siberia” Chill: Even if it’s 30°C outside, the deep gorges (like the “Sibiř” section) act as natural refrigerators. The temperature difference can be over 10°C. Keep a lightweight windbreaker in your daypack—you will definitely need it once you descend into the shadows of the rocks.

FAQ: Adršpach & Teplice Rocks in 2026
Can I enter the rock cities without an online ticket?
We strongly advise against it. During the high season and public holidays, the parks reach full capacity. We personally witnessed tourists being turned away at the gate because there were no tickets left. Always book your slot online at least a few days in advance.
Is it better to visit Adršpach or Teplice?
It depends on your “vibe.” Adršpach is the “star” of the show—visually spectacular and perfect for iconic photos. Teplice is for those who want a raw, demanding hike through massive, dark canyons and fewer crowds. If you have the energy, combine both using the Wolf’s Gorge (Vlčí rokle) trail.
Are these parks suitable for children?
The main green circuit in Adršpach is relatively flat and easy, making it suitable for children. However, the Teplice Rocks loop is demanding, featuring steep ascents and uneven terrain, which can be exhausting for younger kids or travelers without hiking experience.
What is the best way to travel from Poland?
With the new S3 expressway, the drive from Northern or Central Poland is faster than ever. For the smoothest experience, cross the border via the Mieroszów route. It drops you off almost directly at the park gates, avoiding the busier main border crossings. Just be aware that some local mountain roads are very narrow—check your route size if you are driving a large SUV.
