Travel Smarter: Escape the tourist crowds and discover the raw, wild nature of the island beyond the beaches.
Ready to discover the most breathtaking wild places in Cyprus? This island is often marketed as a place for sunbeds and luxury resorts, but there is another side to it. If you step off the beaten path and rent a car, you will find dramatic mountain trails, volcanic lakes, and some of the most powerful coastal scenery in the Mediterranean.
For us, Cyprus is at its best when it’s wild. Here are 6 places that every adventure seeker should include in their itinerary to experience the true soul of the island.
Your Adventure-Packed Cyprus Itinerary
1. Avakas Gorge
This is one of the most spectacular hiking spots on the island. The Avakas Gorge trek takes you through narrow passages with rock walls rising up to 30 meters on both sides. You’ll walk over seasonal streams and under massive boulders stuck between the cliffs. It feels like a scene from an adventure movie.
- Our Tip: Wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. The stones inside the gorge are often wet and very slippery, even in the dry season.

2. Troodos Mountains: Artemis Trail & Kalidonia Waterfall
Escape the heat of the coast and head to the Troodos Mountains. The Artemis Trail is a 7km loop around Mount Olympus (the highest peak) that offers panoramic views and fresh mountain air. Afterward, visit the Kalidonia Waterfall, a lush and refreshing spot hidden in a dense forest.
Our Tip: The temperature in the mountains can be 10-15 degrees lower than at the beach. Always pack a light jacket or a hoodie, even in the middle of summer.

3. Red Lake (Mitsero)
Located in an old mining area, the Red Lake is a volcanic crater lake with a striking red color caused by minerals. It is a surreal landscape (one of the most wild places in Cyprus) that looks like you’ve stepped onto Mars. It’s a fantastic spot for photography and short, rugged hikes around the rim.
Our Tip: The water is highly acidic due to its industrial history. It’s a place for your camera, not for swimming—stick to the trails around the lake for the best views.
4. EDRO III Shipwreck
Just off the shore near Paphos lies the EDRO III, a massive cargo ship that ran aground in 2011. The ship is tilted and sits very close to the rocky coast. The raw energy of the waves hitting the hull creates a powerful atmosphere, especially during a storm.
Our Tip: This is one of the best spots on the island for sunset photography. Arrive an hour before the sun goes down to find the best angle along the rocky cliffs.
5. Cape Greco: Sea Caves & Crow’s Arch
Cape Greco is an adventurer’s playground. You can explore natural sea caves, walk across the famous Crow’s Arch (Kamara tou Koraka), and find the “hidden window”—a small cave opening that looks directly out over the turquoise sea. It’s a perfect area for coastal exploration and snorkeling.
Our Tip: If you are a sunrise lover, this is the place to be. Cape Greco is the easternmost point of the island, and watching the sun rise over the sea caves is an experience you won’t forget.

6. Aphrodite’s Rock & Coastal Cliffs
While many tourists stay near the famous Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou) at sea level, we recommend hiking the cliffs above it. The views of the white limestone meeting the deep blue water are legendary. You can find hidden coves and quiet trails that most people never see.
Our Tip: Skip the main parking lot and drive a little further along the coast road to find small dirt paths leading to the cliff tops. You’ll have the view all to yourself.

Smart Logistics for Cyprus:
- Driving on the Left: Cyprus is one of the few places in Europe where people drive on the left side of the road. If you are not used to this, we strongly recommend renting an automatic car so you can focus on the road instead of shifting gears with your left hand.
- The Right Vehicle: While a small car is fine for the coast, if you plan to explore all the wild places in Cyprus – deeper parts of the Troodos Mountains or the Akamas Peninsula, a car with higher ground clearance (like a small SUV) will give you much more freedom.
- Connectivity: Signal is generally good, but in the deep valleys of the mountains or inside the Avakas Gorge, it can drop. Always have your Google Maps data downloaded for offline use.
Cyprus is built for those who aren’t afraid to get a little dust on their shoes. Whether you’re hiking through a gorge or watching a shipwreck at sunset, the island always rewards those who step off the beaten path.
