7-Day Cyprus Road Trip Itinerary: Best Paphos-Based Guide

Travel Smarter: Discover how to explore the entire island using Paphos as your perfect home base.

Cyprus is the perfect size for a road trip. Many travelers make the mistake of switching hotels every night, but if you stay in Paphos, you can reach almost every major highlight within a 2-hour drive. We spent a week testing these routes to find the best balance between mountain air, ancient history, and wild coastlines.

By renting a car and staying in one place in Paphos, you save time on packing and can focus on the journey. Here is our intense 7-day Cyprus road trip itinerary for exploring the island from west to east.

Your 7-Day Cyprus Road Trip Blueprint

Day 1: The Wild West Coast

Start your trip close to home. Explore the historic Agios Neophytos Monastery, then head to the coast to see the rusted Edro III Shipwreck. Finish your day with a hike in the spectacular Avakas Gorge.

  • Our Tip: Start the Avakas Gorge hike before 11:00 AM. The narrow passages provide great shade, but the trail gets much busier in the afternoon.

Day 2: The Divided Capital and the Red Lake

This is a long driving day (~2h each way). Head to Nicosia, the world’s last divided capital. Walk through the Old Town and cross Ledra Street. On the way back, stop at the surreal Red Lake in Mitsero and the traditional mountain village of Kakopetria.

  • Our Tips:

    • Bring your passport! You need it to cross the green line in Nicosia.

    • Start this day at 8:00 AM at the latest to have enough time for the return stops in Mitsero and Kakopetria.

Day 3: Troodos Mountains and High Peaks

The drive to the Troodos Mountains is steep but beautiful. Visit the villages of Lofou and Lania, then hike the Artemis Trail around Mount Olympus. Don’t miss the Amiantos Asbestos Mine viewpoint and the refreshing Kaledonia Waterfall. Finish with the stunning Kykkos Monastery and Omodos village.

  • Our Tip: The temperature in the mountains is much lower than in Paphos. Even if it is 30°C on the coast, bring a sweater for the Artemis Trail.

Day 4: Ancient Ruins and Limassol Vibes

History lovers will enjoy the Kourion archaeological site, which sits on a cliff overlooking the sea. Visit the medieval Kolossi Castle and spend your afternoon walking through the Limassol Old Town and the modern Marina.

  • Our Tip: Kourion is a large site with very little shade. Visit in the morning and bring a hat and plenty of water.

Day 5: The Far East and Flamingos

This is your longest drive, so be prepared. Head east to Cape Greco and its famous Sea Caves. On the way back, stop in Larnaca to see the Salt Lake (look for flamingos in winter!) and the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque. Finish your day in the charming lace-making village of Lefkara.

  • Our Tips:

    • Check the season for flamingos – they are usually only present from November to March.

    • The walk through Lefkara is best enjoyed just before sunset when the light hits the stone buildings perfectly.

Day 6: The South Coast and Aphrodite

Start with the Limassol Salt Lake and visit the unique Holy Monastery of St. Nicholas of the Cats. Enjoy the views at Pissouri cliffs before ending your day at Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou) for the most iconic sunset on the island.

  • Our Tip: At the Monastery of the Cats, bring some cat treats! The resident cats are friendly and love visitors.

Day 7: Paphos UNESCO Heritage

Keep your final day relaxed and stay within the city. Visit the Paphos Archaeological Park (famous for its mosaics), the Tombs of the Kings, and the Old Town Market. Finish your journey with a walk around the Paphos Harbor and Castle.

  • Our Tip: Most of Paphos’ main sites are within walking distance of each other. Park your car at the Harbor and explore the UNESCO sites on foot.

Smart Logistics for Cyprus:

  • Driving on the Left: Remember that Cyprus drives on the left. Renting an automatic car is a smart move to make navigation easier.

  • Paphos as a Base: Staying in Paphos is great because it has a large selection of apartments with kitchens, allowing you to prepare your own meals and save money.

  • Fuel and Parking: Fuel is affordable, and parking is generally easy to find, even in popular spots. In Nicosia and Limassol, look for large public parking lots on the outskirts of the old towns.
