Best Things to Do in Mahe: 6 Highlights of Seychelles’ Largest Island

Don't just pass through: Discover how to explore the heart of the Seychelles like a pro.

Looking for the best things to do in Mahe? Most travelers treat Mahé as just a gateway to the smaller islands, but that is a mistake. Mahé is the largest island in the Seychelles and offers the perfect mix of wild nature, local culture, and smart logistics. If you rent a car and know where to go, you can find incredible spots without the luxury price tag.

Here are 6 activities you must experience on Mahé to find the soul of this tropical paradise.

Best things to do in Mahe: Our Top 6 Picks

1. Relax on the Most Beautiful Beaches

Mahé has some of the best beaches in the world, and many of them are easy to reach if you have your own wheels.

  • Beau Vallon: This is the most popular beach, and for a good reason. It’s the best place for a golden sunset and has a great local vibe.

  • Anse Royale: A calm lagoon that is perfect for a relaxing day and some of the best snorkeling on the island.

  • Anse Intendance: This is our favorite. It is wild, powerful, and breathtakingly beautiful.

  • Our Tip: Parking at Anse Intendance is limited and the road is narrow. Arrive before 10:00 AM to get a spot close to the beach and enjoy the silence before other travelers arrive.

2. Explore Victoria & The Hindu Temple

Victoria is small enough to explore in a few hours, but it is full of color. Wander through the Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market to see fresh fish and exotic spices. Don’t miss the “Little Ben” (a silver clock tower) and the stunning, colorful Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Hindu Temple.

  • Our Tip: Visit the market on a Saturday morning. It is the busiest time, but it’s the best way to see the local Creole life in action.

3. Taste Local Rum at Takamaka Distillery

You cannot visit the Seychelles without trying Takamaka rum (it’s definitely one of the best things to do in Mahe). The distillery is located at the historic La Plaine St. André estate. You can take a tour to learn about the rum-making process, but we also recommend staying for a Creole lunch in the lush garden.

4. Go Snorkeling in Crystal-Clear Waters

You don’t need expensive boat tours to see amazing marine life on Mahé.

  • Baie Ternay Marine Park: A great spot to see turtles if you are lucky.

  • Port Launay: The waters here are very calm, making it perfect for an easy afternoon of reef spotting.

  • Anse Royale: Great for beginners because the colorful fish are just a few meters from the shore.

  • Our Tip: Bring your own high-quality snorkeling gear. Renting on the beach is often expensive and the quality can be low. Being independent with your gear lets you jump into the water whenever you see a good spot.

5. Hike the Morne Blanc Trail (Into the Jungle)

If you want a challenge with a high reward, this is it. The Morne Blanc Trail is a short but very steep trek through a misty rainforest. Once you reach the top, you are rewarded with one of the most spectacular ocean views on the island.

  • Our Tip: The trail can be very slippery due to the high humidity. Wear shoes with good grip and start early to avoid the midday heat.

6. Find Peace at The Bench of Happy Thoughts

This is one of those hidden gems that make a trip special. The Bench of Happy Thoughts is a quiet, scenic spot with a panoramic view of the island and the sea. It’s the perfect place to sit back, reflect on your journey, and just enjoy the moment.

Smart Logistics: How to explore Mahe efficiently?

  • Rental Car is King: While there are local buses, having a car gives you the freedom to reach wild beaches like Anse Intendance on your own schedule and help you decide your own best things to do in Mahe.

  • Download Offline Maps: Signal can be weak in the mountainous center of the island. Use Google Offline Maps to ensure you never get lost.

  • Budget Eats: Look for “Take-Away” shops. They offer delicious, authentic Creole food (like octopus curry) for a fraction of the price of a sit-down restaurant.
